Kannywood is a Hausa-language film production company, a language spoken by the Hausa people in Africa.

 History of the Kannywood Industry Due to the large Hausa population in Nigeria, Kannywood has its roots in the Nigerian capital, Kano, Session of the Industrial Center in Kano, which is why it is called (KANNYWOOD) where KANNY means Kano and Wood from (Bollywood),

According to Sheme, “I also contributed to the creation of this word. When Malam Sanusi created this word, he used one ‘N’ in the word Kanny.”

In other words, Kany used to use it. “When I saw him using the word Kannywood with one ‘N’, I thought it was wrong,” said Sheme.

He added that the original word was taken from Hollywood and “film makers in southern Nigeria use Nollywood.”

Sheme explained that at that time “I thought it should be called Kalliwood, so I started using the word Kalliwood in the film magazine.”

He said that at that time Malam Shehu was using Kanywood with one N, but later he realized that people were more familiar with the word that Malam Shehu coined Kanywood.

He said “so I went back to using Kannywood but I refused to use it the way he wrote it.”

“Then I added one ‘N’ to make it Kannywood as there is Hollywood and Nollywood with two ‘L’s, so I think two Ns should be used.” as Sheme said.

This word has become popular now, so much so that it has been included in the Oxford English dictionary published in the UK recently. (BBC Hausa 2020)
