Cultures of Creative Practice and Social Change

Crafting a Vision in Multiple Languages

The Department of Languages and Cultures at Lancaster University beckons researchers with a passion for delving into the realms of creative practice and social change. This scholarship focuses on major languages such as Chinese, French, German, or Spanish. Aspiring scholars are encouraged to explore intriguing questions:

How can translation be theorized as a creative and critical practice?

What new creative futures emerge from digital literatures and hybrid forms?

In what ways can creative work influence cultural-political practices or resist oppressive forces for social change?

Exploring authorship, collaborative creativity, and their outreach – can residency programs enhance creative practices?

Rurality, Help-Seeking, and Care Proceedings

The Law School at Lancaster University presents a PhD opportunity delving into the role of place and its impact on children’s life chances. Focusing on deprived, rural locations, and their intersection with the family justice system, this scholarship aims to address pressing questions about high rates of care proceedings. Potential researchers will engage in a qualitative study examining help-seeking behaviors among parents facing parenting difficulties and child protection problems.

Tackling Contemporary Issues through Research

The Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts offers a platform for PhD students to engage in practice-based and/or critical research on pressing contemporary issues. Scholars will tackle topics such as migration and refugeeism, racism, xenophobia, violence, populist politics, postcolonialism, decolonization, globalization, inequality, transport, technology, and mediation. Research proposals within the disciplines of Art, Design, Architecture, Film, and Theatre are especially encouraged.
